How Often Should You Brush Your Dog?
A coat-by-coat guide to brushing frequency, and why a little every day beats a lot once a month.
The short answer
Most dogs benefit from brushing two to three times a week. Long, double or curly coats do best with daily brushing, while short, smooth coats may only need a weekly session.
Why regular brushing matters
Brushing removes loose undercoat before it mats, spreads natural skin oils for a healthy shine, and gives you a chance to spot lumps, ticks or skin irritation early.
Choosing the right tool
A self-cleaning slicker suits most medium and long coats. A fine-tooth comb finishes the face, feet and feathering. Grooming gloves are ideal for short coats and pets who dislike brushes.
Make it a ritual
Keep sessions short, calm and rewarding. Brush in the direction of hair growth, pause for praise and finish before your dog grows restless.
