The Stress-Free Guide to Trimming Your Pet's Nails

Step-by-step techniques to make nail care calm for anxious pets and nervous owners alike.

How often to trim

If you can hear nails clicking on hard floors, it's time. For most dogs that is every three to four weeks; cats usually every two to three weeks.

Clipper or buffer?

Clippers are fast; a low-vibration buffer lets you remove small amounts gradually and smooths sharp edges, which many anxious pets prefer.

Avoiding the quick

The quick is the living tissue inside the nail. Trim little and often, and on dark nails stop when you see a grey or pink oval in the centre of the cut surface.

Build positive associations

Start by simply handling paws, then introduce the tool switched off, then one nail per session. Reward generously throughout.
